5 Things to Watch: Lions vs. Giants

The Detroit Lions and New York Giants will face off in their preseason opener on Friday night at Ford Field. Both teams are looking to build off of strong offseasons and make a push for the playoffs in 2023.

Here are five things to watch in the Lions vs. Giants game:

  1. The battle of the quarterbacks. The Lions and Giants both have new starting quarterbacks this season. Jared Goff will be making his debut for the Lions after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams, while Daniel Jones will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season. This will be a good opportunity to see how both quarterbacks perform in their first game under center.
  2. The running game. Both the Lions and Giants have talented running backs. The Lions have D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, while the Giants have Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida. This could be a high-scoring game, so it will be important for both teams to establish the run.
  3. The defense. The Lions and Giants both have young and improved defenses. The Lions have added a number of new pieces to their defense, including Aidan Hutchinson, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Jameson Williams. The Giants have a strong secondary led by James Bradberry and Adoree’ Jackson. This should be a good battle between two young and talented defenses.

  1. The rookies. Both the Lions and Giants have a number of talented rookies who could make an impact in this game. The Lions have wide receiver Jameson Williams, tight end Brock Purdy, and defensive tackle Aidan Hutchinson. The Giants have wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, and defensive tackle Travis Jones. This will be a good opportunity to see how the rookies perform in their first NFL game.
  2. The outcome. The Lions and Giants are both expected to be competitive in 2023, so this game could have playoff implications. The winner of this game will get a confidence boost heading into the regular season.

The Lions and Giants are both looking to make a statement in their preseason opener. This should be a close and exciting game, and it will be interesting to see which team comes out on top.
