President Biden on Tuesday designated a national monument to honor Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. The monument will be located in Mississippi and Illinois, and will tell the story of Till’s murder in 1955, and of his mother’s efforts to ensure it would never be forgotten.

Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral, so that the world could see the horrific extent of her son’s injuries. Her decision helped to turn Till’s murder into a national symbol of the injustice of racial segregation.
