England Edge Nigeria in Penalty Shootout to Reach Women’s World Cup Quarterfinals

England advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Monday, defeating Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the match was tied 1-1 after 120 minutes.


The match was a close affair throughout, with both teams creating chances but unable to find the breakthrough in regulation time. Nigeria had the better of the first half, but England came out stronger in the second and had the better of the chances.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 87th minute when England’s Lauren James scored a brilliant goal from outside the box. However, Nigeria equalized in the 118th minute through a penalty from Ifeoma Onumonu.

The match went to a penalty shootout, and England converted all four of their penalties, while Nigeria missed two. Chloe Kelly scored the winning penalty for England, sending her team into the quarterfinals.

The victory was a hard-fought one for England, but they will be relieved to have advanced. They will now face the winner of the match between France and Brazil in the quarterfinals.
