Guardians’ 9th-inning errors cost them in 5-3 loss to White Sox

The Guardians had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 9th inning on a sacrifice fly by Steven Kwan. But with two outs in the bottom of the inning, Rocchio made a throwing error on a ground ball by Oscar Colás that allowed one run to score. Calhoun then misplayed a ground ball by Luis Robert, allowing two more runs to score and giving the White Sox the lead.

The Guardians had a chance to get out of the inning with a double play, but Rocchio’s throw to second base was too late, allowing Robert to reach safely. Elvis Andrus then followed with a two-run single to give the White Sox the final margin.

The loss was a tough one for the Guardians, who had been playing well in recent weeks. They had won four of their previous five games, and they were looking to sweep the White Sox in the three-game series.

But the Guardians’ defense let them down in the 9th inning. Rocchio and Calhoun both made costly errors that allowed the White Sox to come back and win the game.

“It’s tough to lose a game like that,” said Guardians manager Terry Francona. “We had a chance to win, but we made a couple of mistakes and they capitalized on them.”

The Guardians will look to bounce back on Monday when they open a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
