The New York Mets traded closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins on Thursday night, but that doesn’t mean Edwin Diaz’s return to the team is imminent.
Diaz, who is rehabbing from a torn right patellar tendon, is still several weeks away from being able to pitch in a game. Manager Buck Showalter said that the Mets won’t rush Diaz back, and that the Robertson trade “is not gonna change the timeline.”

In the meantime, the Mets will use a committee of relievers to close games. Brooks Raley, who pitched the ninth inning in Robertson’s final game with the Mets, is a leading candidate to be the team’s closer. Other options include Seth Lugo, Trevor May, and Joely RodrÃguez.
The Mets are currently in second place in the National League East, but they are only 2.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Mets are looking for any way to improve their bullpen.

However, it’s clear that Diaz’s return is not the answer to their problems. The Mets’ bullpen has been one of the worst in baseball this season, and even when Diaz is healthy, he’s not the same pitcher he was when he was traded to New York in 2018.
The Mets need to find a way to upgrade their bullpen if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs. Trading for Robertson was a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. The Mets still need to find a closer who can be relied on to get the job done.
