The New Orleans Saints took a 17-7 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs at halftime of their 2023 NFL preseason Week 1 matchup on Saturday at Caesars Superdome.
Backup quarterback Jameis Winston led the Saints on two scoring drives in the first half, throwing a 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver A.T. Perry and connecting with tight end Adam Trautman on a 13-yard scoring strike. Perry had a strong half with six catches for 70 yards, while Winston was 11 of 13 for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert to receiver Richie James with 8:26 to play in the second quarter. But the Saints responded with a 36-yard field goal by Wil Lutz to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

The Chiefs had a chance to score before halftime, but New Orleans safety Ugo Amadi picked off reserve quarterback Shane Buechele to preserve the Saints’ lead.
The Saints’ starters on offense and defense were pulled after the first score, giving the backups a chance to get some playing time. The backups responded by outscoring the Chiefs 10-0 in the second quarter.
The Saints will look to extend their lead in the second half. The Chiefs will need to find a way to get their offense going if they want to get back in the game.
