Perseid Meteor Shower Lights Up Skies in Spectacular Display

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the most popular astronomical events of the year, reached its peak on the night of August 11-12, 2023. Skywatchers across the globe were treated to a spectacular display of shooting stars, with up to 100 meteors per hour visible in dark skies.

The Perseids are caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun every 133 years. As the comet passes through the inner solar system, it leaves behind a trail of dust and debris. When Earth passes through this trail, the particles collide with our atmosphere at high speeds, creating meteors.

The Perseids are best seen in the Northern Hemisphere, where they appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. The best time to view the shower is after midnight, when the sky is dark and the meteors are most active.

If you missed the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, don’t worry! You can still catch a glimpse of the shower until August 24. However, the number of meteors will gradually decrease over the next few days.

To get the best view of the Perseids, find a dark location away from city lights. Lie on your back and look up at the sky. You may want to bring a blanket or chair to make yourself comfortable. Be patient and keep your eyes peeled for shooting stars!
