Sal Frelick’s MLB Debut: Brewers’ Former First-Round Pick Goes 3-for-3, Drives in Game-Winning Run

Milwaukee, WI – Sal Frelick made his major league debut on Saturday night, and he made an immediate impact. The Brewers’ former first-round pick went 3-for-3 with a single, a double, and a sac fly, and he drove in the game-winning run in a 4-3 comeback win over the Atlanta Braves.

Frelick, 23, was called up from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day to replace Raimel Tapia, who was designated for assignment. He started in right field and batted sixth for the Brewers.

In his first at-bat, Frelick singled to left field off Braves starter Allan Winans. He then doubled to right field in the third inning, and he drove in the game-tying run with a sac fly in the sixth inning.

Frelick’s biggest moment came in the eighth inning, when he hit a sac fly to center field that scored Keston Hiura from third base for the game-winning run.

Frelick also made two leaping catches at the wall in the top of the sixth inning, robbing Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley of extra-base hits.

“He’s a really good player,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after the game. “He’s got a lot of tools. He’s got a lot of athleticism. He’s got a lot of instincts. He’s got a good feel for the game. He’s got a good approach at the plate. He’s a really good player.”

Frelick’s performance was a bright spot for the Brewers, who have been struggling in recent weeks. The team is currently in third place in the National League Central, 10.5 games behind the first-place St. Louis Cardinals.

But Frelick’s debut gives the Brewers some hope for the future. He is one of the team’s top prospects, and he could be a key part of the team’s long-term success.
