Disney is reviving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but it’s unclear if Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Disney’s Motion Picture Production President Sean Bailey said that the studio is “noncommittal” at this point about Depp’s return.
“We love the character of Jack Sparrow,” Bailey said. “We love the actor Johnny Depp. There are no plans at this moment.”
Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean films, which have grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. He was fired from the franchise in 2018 after his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse. Depp denied the allegations and won a defamation lawsuit against Heard in June 2022.
It’s possible that Disney could bring Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow in a future Pirates of the Caribbean film. However, it’s also possible that the studio will recast the role or move forward with a new spin-off series without Depp.
Only time will tell if Depp will return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the five films that he starred in.
