Tottenham Begin Life Without Kane With Promising Draw at Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur began life without Harry Kane with a 2-2 draw at Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Kane had sealed his move to Bayern Munich on Saturday, and Spurs were without their talismanic striker for the first time since 2011.

But new manager Ange Postecoglou’s side showed plenty of promise in their opening game under the Australian, creating a number of chances and dominating possession for large periods of the game.

Cristian Romero gave Spurs the lead in the 11th minute with a header from a James Maddison free-kick.

But Brentford equalized 15 minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo, who converted a penalty after Son Heung-min was adjudged to have fouled Mathias Jensen.

The Bees then took the lead in the 36th minute when Yoane Wissa’s shot deflected in off Micky van de Ven.

But Spurs refused to give up and pulled level in first-half stoppage time when Emerson Royal lashed in a shot from Maddison’s pass.

The second half was a more evenly contested affair, with neither side able to find a winner.

The draw was a decent result for Spurs on a day when they were without their best player.

Postecoglou will be pleased with the way his side played, and they will be confident of building on this performance in the weeks and months to come.
